When going to the MIA I decided to compare the 2 paintings of portraits of 2 woman.
Amedeo Modigliani "Little Servant Girl" (1916) and Paulus Moreelse "Portrait of Catharina Van Voorst" (1628)
These paintings are both different but similar they are different because on is clearly more modern then the other and they are the same because they are both of woman and both are portraits. But, is one of the woman more beautiful then the other? One is of a servant and one is of clearly a woman with a lot of money and the painting are from some seriously different times, one modern one from early europian times. Either way, they are still so beautiful in their own way and what is the true definition of beauty? The servant girl is tan skinned in a slim black dress, night gown thing and the other woman is very pale skinned and in a (i wouldnt doubt) personally made dress, that is extremly extravogent. In my eyes both of these woman are beautiful in their own way. Im sure they were beautiful in the eyes of whoever painted them as well.

In thinking about how Fred Wilson puts work together to form a new meaning or raise a question for the viewer, it seems like you are raising the question of how beauty is represented in different time periods.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could use a little external information about the artist here...
